"What the fuck," Maeve says when he picks her up, but she's laughing, too. Whenever she's with Steve, she finds herself in this state she doesn't completely understand. She has more fun, honestly, than she's had in awhile, even if her defences are still up in most ways. Steve doesn't have to know that, though. He doesn't have to know about all the stupid shit in her life that has turned her into this prickly person just to keep herself safe.

"Speak for yourself," she answers, wriggling to get down off his shoulder so she can find her bedding. "I know I'm a heathen. Been told often enough."
