"No, she just thought drugs were more fun than her kids," Maeve answers. She knows Gideon's mother wasn't a good person, she knows she's been through awful things, which only solidifies what Maeve feels. Bringing more people into a world, especially when so many are already unloved, it just doesn't feel right.

"He didn't," she says, tapping one finger on the table, then drawing a circle, needing something to look at. "He didn't try to change my mind, but he... he made it seem like I was making some sort of decision about him. Like I just didn't want to have a family with him, not in general."
